"Dance is nothing but movement through time and space, so if you're moving in time, you're starting to dance!"

I have studied with Beth Hoge since 1985, as well as various staff at Mills College, including Mary Ann Kinkead, Kathleen McKlintock, June Watanabe, Michael Kelly Bruce, and guest instructors Molissa Fenley, Tim Wengerd, and Donald McKayle. I have also studied at many Bay Area dance studios, including Danspace, San Francisco Dance Center, Shawl-Anderson, Alice Arts Center, Broadway Dance Center, Berkeley Ballet Theatre, Brady Street Dance Center, and Mission Dance Theater. I was also accepted into the Alvin Ailey Dance Center summer program where I studied ballet, jazz, Horton technique, Dunham and Graham technique, as well as various Ailey Repertory. Additionally, I participated in the Checcetti Council of America teachers program, the YogaFitâ„¢ teacher certification program, and the Balanced Body Pilates certification program.
In 1992, I received my Masters in Fine Arts in Dance at Mills College. I have a wealth of experience teaching ballet, modern, jazz, musical theater, and a variety of other dance styles at various schools, including Danspace, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Mission Dance, Danceavision, California Theater Arts, Academy Ballet, and Dance Connection Performing Arts Center. I have been on staff at Mills College, Shawl Anderson Dance Center, School of the Arts in San Francisco and have directed the City of Oakland's young artists in dance with New Generations Dance Company. In addition to being on staff at Danspace, I am also Professor of Dance and Dance Department Chair at Diablo Valley College.
My dedication to the health and well-being of the human body through dance, performance, and physical activity has led me to study with many leaders in the health and fitness industry through conferences such as IDEA fitness, SCW Fitness, Balance Body Pilates certification program.
As a performer, I am blessed to work with some amazing choreographers and dance companies, including Robert Henry Johnson Dance Company, Kim Epifano, Ann Bluethenthal & Dancers, Shakiri/Rootworkers, danceNaganuma, and Mary Carbonara/dances. My performance experience has also included music videos with artists such as Bobbie McFerrin and Tandy Beal, musical theater - including West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, Carousel, and Peter Pan - and I have worked with famed L.A. choreographer and Emmy Award winner Marguerite Derricks, with the Golden State Warriors Dance Company. Since 1992, I have been a company member of Dance Brigade in San Francisco, where I perform taiko drumming and modern dance with a political feminist theatrical edge.
As a choreographer, my work can be seen throughout the Bay Area, in musical theater productions such as Into the Woods, Annie Get Your Gun, Cabaret, Aida, Scottsboro Boys, and independent movie vehicles such as Frog & Wombat. I have also served as artist-in-residence at College Preparatory School and direct the contemporary dance company , COterie DAnce (CODA).
I believe in quality instruction and giving attention to all students at whatever level of training they are at. I have an outgoing, fun personality, and I believe in hard work, a sense of community, technique, and attention to detail without sacrificing the needs of the student. As a performer, I believe in good dance technique, attention to the purpose/details of the movement, strong performance quality, and in working well with others. As a choreographer, my style ranges from ballet to modern to jazz to musicals and anything that strikes my curiosity and imagination. I thrive on variety!
